Dance Movement Therapy Program Brings Joy and Connection

A Transformative Journey for Carers and People with Dementia

From April to June, Sandybeach Centre has been alive with joy, movement, and connection, thanks to our Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) program for carers and individuals with dementia. This one-hour-per-week program has provided not only physical activity but also emotional well-being, self-expression, and group bonding.

Unforgettable Experiences and Connections

The DMT program has been a beacon of positivity and growth, allowing participants to engage, express, and connect in ways that bring smiles and joy to all involved. We have witnessed countless uplifting moments reflecting the deep connections formed between participants.

Program Goals and Achievements

The DMT program aimed to:

  • Provide Integrated Care: Through engaging dance and movement sessions.

  • Encourage Participation: From a place of ability, promoting self-worth and revitalisation

  • Foster Connections: Helping participants connect with themselves, others, and the group.

  • Promote Joy and Relaxation: Through expressive movements and playful interactions.

Through structured sessions that began in a circle for a sense of community, participants experienced a safe and non-judgmental environment. Props like scarves, balls, and the Octaband stimulate imagination and facilitate connections, regardless of participants' movement abilities.

Testimonials

The feedback from participants and carers has been overwhelmingly positive. Here are a few words from those who joined us:

"What a pleasure those sessions! They enabled us to be more open and alert. This teacher teaches us to respect others and ourselves. A great lesson of humility!”

"The dance and movement sessions were a revelation for [us both], inclusive and fun. [He] enjoyed dancing and movement and was happy to be involved each week. We would recommend the program to any prospective attendees.”

"Thank you for the opportunity to take this program of dance movement. I have been caring for Mum for 8 years who is living with Alzheimer's. This class allowed her to join group activities without judgment or fear of judgment. The music and movement were so liberating for her, but most importantly she was able to connect with other people confidently and freely. Every class gave her a huge smile and she much enjoyed exercise. My care role is 24/7 and intense, and the classes also gave me moments of joy and freedom. It would be great to have more classes like this in the future. A huge thank you also to all involved at Sandybeach Centre, from the front desk to the snacks and drinks, to the supportive conversations at the end of each session. It has been a very positive experience for mother and me."

Looking Forward

As the program concludes, there is a shared hope among participants, carers, and organisers for its continuation. The Dance Movement Therapy program has undeniably brought joy, empowerment, and community to Sandybeach Centre.

With heartfelt thanks to all involved, especially Lyn, our dedicated volunteer, we look forward to more opportunities to dance, connect, and thrive together.

Mary-Claude Vienet, Dance Movement Therapist, expresses her gratitude for the opportunity to lead such a transformative program and looks forward to continuing this journey with the community.
