Great role for the right person …
Reach – Volunteer Bus Jockeys
The REACH Department provides a variety of activities and support for older people in the local community. Participants are transported in of one of our 2 eleven seater mini buses. We require two volunteers to act as bus jockeys assisting the driver with escorting clients to and from the bus at their homes and at the Centre. Reasonable fitness is required as the volunteer would be required to be in and out of the front seat of the bus repeatedly on an average run, as well as assist with seat belts and safe storage of walking aids in the back of the bus. The volunteer would then attend the program and assist the coordinator as needed as well as provide support and companionship to the clients. No aged care experience necessary, but the desire to work with the elderly and an awareness of their needs is essential. Training where required would be provided by Sandybeach Centre staff. The two programs are as follows:
- Music Alive – Tuesdays 12.30 to 4.30 approx. This is a weekly concert attended by up to 50 participants with theme days, sing alongs and music quizzes.
- Armchair Travel – Fridays 12.30 to 4.00 approx. A talk, powerpoint display and / or videos of the travel experiences of a guest presenter.

Volunteers have a vital role in enhancing and expanding the services and activities provided at Sandybeach Centre. The benefits of voluntary contributions are many and extend to the volunteers themselves, the staff who work with them and the wider community. Sandybeach Centre follows Volunteering Australia’s National Standards for involving volunteers in not for profit organisations and recognises that volunteer rights are as important as their responsibilities within the organisation.
Our volunteers are supported by program leaders and the Volunteers Co-ordinator. Training is provided where and when applicable. Approximately 90 volunteers work at Sandybeach Centre in the following areas:
Community Support
The Reach/Reach Respite program caters for the elderly in our community providing activities at Sandybeach and at off-site locations. Participants may require transport as well as one-on-one support during their activity. Exercises, Music, Life Stories, Armchair Travel all rely on volunteer involvement. Partial reimbursement of petrol expenses for volunteers who use their own vehicles is available.
Adult Education
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes require volunteer assistance for class based and small group work in a specialist area of adult education.
Volunteers assist tutors in the Disability Program, working with students in areas such as literacy, numeracy, health & wellbeing, cooking and gardening.
Childcare
As a Class 2 Registered Child Care Centre, we offer Occasional Child Care each weekday morning in addition to a school holiday program. Volunteers with experience or a current enrolment in a recognised Early Childhood Education Course are ideally suited to this role.
Administration
Volunteers assist in our reception and administration offices. They perform a wide range of administrative tasks as well as provide assistance for the Centre’s managers and program co-ordinators.
