What Our People Say
Sandybeach Centre provides learning opportunities, cultural activities and social support services for many groups in the local community.  Here are some comments from participants and tutors in our many programs.

Wendy Elme
I have been exercising with hand weights twice weekly for over 4 years to help with Diabetes Type 2. The classes are great enjoyment, with lots of hard work and laughter. In July this year my doctor decided I no longer required Diabetes medication as I had it under control. I can't speak highly enough of our teacher Angel's professional approach and individual encouragement. I recommend exercising with hand weights to others who have Diabetes.

I have been taking the choirs at Sandybeach for nine years now and still enjoy the challenge of making beautiful music with enthusiastic singers. I currently teach at Haileybury College, in Brighton where I am Deputy Director of Music teaching 3 to 14 year olds. I am eclectic with my musical tastes, I specially love 60's music with a smattering of Rachmaninov.
Heather and Karl Ripke
"We both enjoy working with the Armchair Travel part of the Reach program and greatly enjoy the company of the clients, staff and other volunteers." Heather is otherwise involved in volunteering work for the Black Rock Activity Centre, is the Treasurer of the Beaumaris View Club and a keen yoga disciple. Karl runs his own business as a computer compliance consultant to the finance industry.

I’m Cynthia. I come from China. I’ve been in Australia since the end of January 2002 and learning English at the Sandybeach Centre for almost two and a half years. The reason I like learning English at Sandybeach Centre is the courses and activities that were designed are suitable for me, especially the teachers here are lovely – they’re friendly, cheerful and patient. They are very involved in their work and the students, and always try their best to help and encourage every one of us. I’ve got lots of fun and fantastic experiences. So, I’ll still be learning here and wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. English classes.

Here at Sandybeach we aim for you to have fun in our informal cooking classes. Learn some tricks of the trade that makes things simple to do and then sit down to a small feast and sample the end products. I have been in the industry for over 34 years including head chef and top level catering. My love and passion of cooking comes from my mother and grandmothers and a wide circle of friends from all ethnic backgrounds as well as some recipe development of my own. Apparently I made my first cake at the age of 4, and yes I was told that it was very edible. I am passionate to show that cooking is easy and unravel the mysteries. Join us for fun and laughs and meet new people with the same love of food.

Dorothy Wilkinson and Joy Poll

Dorothy (right) says: "I really enjoy doing Tai Chi as I feel I can cope with the slow movements and I can do it either in the lounge or outdoors, and as many times a day as I feel like. I am sure I am benefitting from the exercise."

Joy (left) says: "When I turned seventy-nine this year, I decided it was time to embark on a new experience before it was too late! So, I enrolled in a Tuesday morning Tai Chi class which caused a few raised eyebrows among some family members and friends. I am inclined to be a bit clumsy due to a hip injury and slight arthritis – not an ideal subject! The two tutors, Angel and Elana, were most patient, kind and encouraging. I have gained so much: noticeable improvement in balance, co-ordination and concentration, and new friends of both sexes. I would wholeheartedly recommend Tai Chi for any adventurous older person. "

I have been teaching yoga here at the Sandybeach Centre since 1987. Prior to this I trained and taught at the Sivananda School of Yoga and Alton Arts and Crafts. I thoroughly enjoy working in the warm and friendly atmosphere at Sandybeach with the students and the local community.
